Renowned poets like Mirza Ghalib, Allama Iqbal, and Faiz Ahmed Faiz have left an indelible mark on Urdu poetry. Their work often explores themes of love, mysticism, philosophy, and socio-political issues. In prose, Urdu literature includes a variety of forms such as novels, short stories, and essays. Writers like Saadat Hasan Manto, Ismat Chughtai, and Qurratulain Hyder have made significant contributions with their powerful narratives and social commentaries. Urdu drama also plays a crucial role in the literature, with playwrights like Agha Hashar Kashmiri and Imtiaz Ali Taj creating timeless works that continue to be performed and appreciated.
